Coach Meg pressed her stopwatch and said, “Go!” Addy dove into the water. She swam as fast as she could toward the other end. Coach Meg would see that she was a great swimmer.

She completed the first length. As she touched the wall, she thought, This is a really big pool.

She turned and started back. Her muscles were beginning to burn. But she kept pushing. She needed a good time. She touched the other wall.

Halfway. She started the third length. She thought, This is supposed to be a short swim?

Her strokes were getting weaker. It felt like the water was getting thicker. She touched the wall a third time.

She struggled back to the finish. Can twelve-year-olds have heart attacks? she thought. Is this what it feels like to die?
